Job Description Summary:UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for the CPAESS Assistant Director role. This position is contributes to the overall leadership, planning, and strategy related to the role of the Scientific Partnerships and Service (SPS) Center, Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS) and the UCAR|NCAR enterprise. The Assistant Director will lead the Community Building and Internship efforts within the SPS CPAESS Center, supervising one direct exempt employee, and nine indirect nonexempt employees.

CPAESS serves the Earth System Science community in three distinct areas of service. We partner with federal agencies and businesses to hire critical scientific staff enabling a more robust workforce. Through our scientific programs we seek to edify new research with our postdoctoral programs, our visiting scientist and internship programs, along with our interagency support programs. We also help build the Earth system science community by convening and managing summer schools and institutes, conferences, and advisory committees.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Leadership & Management

  • Provide strategic leadership for Community Building and Internship Activities within SPS in consultation with the SPS Center Director and Deputy Director.

  • Serve as a member of the SPS CPAESS Leadership Team, participating in all Center leadership meetings, and representing SPS Director and Deputy Director in assigned internal and external meetings.

  • Act as Acting Center Director in the absence of the Center Director and Deputy Director.

  • Offer high-level programmatic support to SPS CPAESS Senior Leadership in leading the SPS CPAESS Center, including participating in overall Center management activities such as staff planning, hiring, and budget development.

  • Co-create Center strategic priorities and associated KPIs in collaboration with SPS Leadership, and implement SPS strategic priorities alongside the Center Deputy Director.

Program Development & Partnerships

  • Conduct business development activities to support Community Building and Internship priorities, including potentially serving as a co-PI on related proposals.

  • Lead the strategy and growth of internship activities within SPS CPAESS, collaborating with the SPS Deputy Director and Program Coordinator.

  • Maintain strong relationships with sponsors and oversee awards while ensuring the quality and impact of community-building events and products.

Award Management & Proposal Development

  • Develop and oversee budgets and expenditures for awards, including writing highlights of award accomplishments.

  • Serve as the proposal development project manager for assigned SPS Center proposals, collaborating with the SPS CPAESS proposal development team and co-develop Center reports, including Progress, Annual, and Final reports, as defined in award conditions.

  • Act as a liaison for proposal development across UCP, NCAR, and the Earth system science community.

  • Oversee subawards and subcontracts, working with CPAESS leadership, budget analysts, federal agency program managers, and UCAR Contracts to develop work statements.

  • Lead conversations with UCAR Contracts to ensure compliance with UCAR, Federal, and sponsor requirements and with international and domestic awardees to validate Scope of Work (SOW) requirements.

Operations & Community Engagement

  • Supervise the Events and Travel Lead to maintain a high-performing team delivering outstanding service to sponsors and community members.

  • Collaborate with Center Leadership and Business Shared Services to ensure equitable performance management across the Center.

  • Ensure high-quality community-building events and products with broader impact potential and collaborate on communication content with the SPS CPAESS Communication Manager.

Education & Experience

  • Master's degree in a related area;

  • 8 years of experience planning, implementing, and managing projects;

    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired, but not required:

  • Background in Earth system science, environmental science, or atmospheric science is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced ability to manage, prioritize, and implement elements of multi-faceted programs, including overseeing budgets, staff, and multiple projects.

  • Proven and demonstrated ability to lead multiple project teams and allocate team resources effectively.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated skill in working effectively with a diverse team of scientific, technical, and operational staff.

  • Advanced experience in developing multi-year proposals including statements of work, budgets, and solicitation requirement compliance.

  • Advanced skill in award management including adherence to awards terms and conditions, award expectations, budgets, and reporting.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently.

  • Advanced skill in written and oral communication for a variety of audiences.

  • Advanced knowledge of best practices associated with professional development.

  • Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication with the public.

  • Experience in program management and team management/supervision.

  • Experience working with underrepresented populations in science and/or education.

  • Ability to travel, as needed.
