To advance that mission, the Federation is hiring a Director, Tribal Law to further Indigenous legal and policy priorities, support the leadership and implementation of NWF's Tribal and Indigenous Partnerships Enhancement Strategy (TIPES), and provide national policy leadership on Tribal and Indigenous issues. The Director, Tribal Law will provide leadership reflective of NWF's principles supportive of Tribal Sovereignty, self-determination, Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and the federal trust responsibility as well as core Indigenous values centered on Food Sovereignty, Water Protection, and Intergenerational Knowledge Transmission.
Principal Duties (major areas of responsibility):
Working closely with the Vice President and the Senior Director of Tribal Partnerships and Policy, the Director, Tribal Law is primarily responsible for leading and collaborating with NWF staff on national policy issues involving Tribal and Indigenous priorities and providing expertise and associated actions on Federal Indian Law and Policy, including improving existing and crafting new policy with a focus on inclusion, equity, and justice as well as NWF's core values for Tribal and Indigenous partnerships.
The Director, Tribal Law will model the principles and values of NWF's Tribal and Indigenous Partnerships Enhancement Strategy (TIPES) and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). This position will forge authentic relationships and partnerships across the country to support Tribal Sovereignty; advance Indigenous policy priorities; and work directly with Tribes and Indigenous Peoples to uplift their voices.

Skills and Qualifications:
Strong candidates for this position will bring experience in Federal Indian Law and Policy; advocacy and lobbying; excellent communication and writing skills; and a deep commitment to advancing Indigenous policy priorities. These proficiencies are typically consistent with approximately 7-10 years of professional experience.
Desired qualification: familiarity with a language that is indigenous to the Americas.

Travel Requirements:
This position will travel monthly to Washington, D.C. or other domestic locations.

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $82,000 - $95,000, commensurate with experience.
