What Success Looks Like In This Job

Acting on behalf of the District Attorney and representing the people of the State of Colorado, the Chief Deputy District Attorney performs professional, supervisory and legal work in the prosecution of criminal cases in the 17th Judicial District.

Attorneys in this category must consistently demonstrate the experience and competence necessary to handle first chair/lead prosecutor responsibilities on any type of case, regardless of complexity. Attorneys must also demonstrate the leadership ability to effectively supervise and manage a wide range of professional employees, and positively develop and enhance relationships with law enforcement, the judiciary, the defense bar, victim groups and community organizations.

Examples of Duties for Success

Legal

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to seeking justice, preserving community safety, and improving the criminal justice system.

  • Oversee a unit of attorneys and the criminal cases assigned to those attorneys

  • Handle all aspects of trial litigation on complex criminal cases, including investigation, preliminary hearings, plea negotiations, arraignments, discovery, evidentiary motions, jury trials, sentencing hearings and post-conviction motions

  • Review evidence and make decisions on the filing of criminal cases, including felonies, misdemeanors and juvenile cases

  • Provide mentorship, assistance and legal advice to attorneys regarding criminal cases in their dockets and maintain responsibility for legal standards and decisions in such cases

  • Supervise and review the preparation and presentation of evidence in all criminal cases in the unit

  • Provides counsel and guidance to attorneys regarding legal strategies and legal issues

Supervision-Related Duties

  • Effectively supervise a team of attorneys and other professionals

  • Demonstrate a high level of leadership and management acumen in supervising said team

  • Establish and maintain positive, supportive, and effective working relationships with attorneys under supervision, with fellow Chief Deputies and managers, and with all District Attorney staff

  • Plan and direct work to assigned attorneys and employees within the office.

  • Appraise performance, which includes writing and conducting personnel evaluations, addressing performance related issues in a timely and constructive manner, handling complaints, and resolving problems.

  • Establish, nurture, and improve relationships between the Office of the District Attorney and the community we serve.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels to include department personnel, public law enforcement agencies, community groups and the general public.

  • Provide mentorship and training to subordinate attorneys to enhance their legal skills and cultivate their growth

  • Maintain an effective working environment that motivates individuals to meet goals and objectives.

  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures and applicable laws. Supervisory duties may also include interviewing, selecting, training, assigning, evaluating, promoting and disciplining subordinate staff.


Additional duties

  • Advise the District Attorney on policy, personnel issues, criminal cases and public relations matters

  • Provide off-hour and on-call services to police agencies requiring assistance during nights and weekends.

  • Confer with the District Attorney and Assistant District Attorneys regarding the development, implementation and evaluation of programs, policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.

  • Serve as liaison to law enforcement agencies within 17th Judicial District.

  • Assist the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) in the investigation of officer involved shootings or other officer involved critical incidents. Support the goal of the CIRT to promote transparency in the investigation of critical incidents by providing complete and consistent investigative practices by an independent fact-finding group.

  • Serve on other specialty teams and task forces as necessary.


To be successful, our ideal candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of the duties, powers, limitations and authorities of the District Attorney's Office and related law enforcement or criminal justice agencies.

  • Knowledge of established precedents, case law and sources of legal reference applicable to the activities of assigned specialized area and the District Attorney's Office.

  • Knowledge of criminal law and procedure and advanced principles of litigation, trial and hearing procedures, practices, and rules of evidence.

  • Knowledge of leadership principles and personnel management practices including staff development, principles of supervision, administration, organization, selection, training, and discipline.

  • Knowledge of ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional standards and/or federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Ability to interpret and apply law and court decisions, and to use legal source material in technical research.

  • Skill in effectively and persuasively expressing complex ideas orally and in writing.

  • Skill in the prosecution of complex criminal cases and ability to prepare and maintain complex files and records.

  • Knowledge of methods of legal research and investigation methodology, judicial procedure, and the rules of evidence in the preparation of briefs, reports, and memoranda.

  • Ability to work in a consulting capacity with public officials and law enforcement at every level of authority.

  • Skill in acting with professionalism, courtesy, and discretion in frequent contact with staff, court personnel, defense attorneys, pro se defendants, public officials, and law enforcement at various levels of authority, and citizens, including victims and witnesses.

  • Ability to supervise, monitor, and coordinate the activities of a major criminal trial team.

  • Effectively support and communicate policies, procedures, and programs to staff, law enforcement agencies, the judicial system, and the public.

Qualifications for Success


  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school is required.

  • Minimum of six years' practice as an attorney prosecuting a full range of felony cases, including complex cases

  • Demonstrated leadership experience
